I agree with you. We cannot, against all odds, continue to maintain a military in its past and current form in an already overstretched third world economy. I believe that our army must be made to play a dual role - both economic and military, to justify its existence. Armies in much more developed countries play this dual role with their specialist agencies such as engineers, medical and peacekeeping units, offering their services to civil society as consultants, facilitators, Peace-keepers and contractors.

No army anywhere can seriously operate in any conflict situation on the basis of a poor economy. This means supplies such as food rations, medical support, transportation and military equipment replacement shall not be forthcoming as should be to enable the front lines fight more effectively.

The fact that very senior members of the NDC Party and govt, including no less a personality than the Defence Minister himself were on board of that military plane that was piloted by some of the best airmen in the Ghana Airforce, does indeed bring up issues of suspicion of sabotage. That the President himself was due to have been a member of that delegation that was headed to an anti-galamsey event, arouses further suspicions.

These military planes have been regularly criss-crossing the skies of the country without any serious accidents and it is only when on the rare occasion that a powerful govt delegation is on one of their flights that their plane crashes? Plane crashes in Ghana are such a rare phenomenon that they are generally considered as unheard of or simply non-existent. As compared to more developed countries that have even more sophisticsted equipment and planes, the safety record of aviation in Ghana is commendable. The probability, therefore, of the cause of this tragedy as a mere accident or mishap, is then replaced by an even more more probable and serious likelihood of the cause as being one of a contrived accident. The likelihood that either of the financially vital Ministers of Defence as well as that of the Environment or even both of them who were on that fateful flight, could have been earmarked for elimination by local or foreign sharks, is highly amenable for consideration particularly at this time in the turbulent climate of the global economy.

To dismiss such considerations from the "let it be" simplistic typically African perspective as being mere conspiracy theories, would not only be a pity but it would also affirm the fact that we are are still afraid to confront and overwhelm the demons that retard our progress.

The SPECIFICATIONS given by GhanaWeb (i.e. 73 passangers/48 equiped troops; Pratt & Whitney (PW) Engines etc), are from the source - af.mil.gh, and are highly inaccurate. The helicopter is not at all big enough to carry 73 passengers, and does not use Canadian PW (Pratt & Whitney Engines).

The Adansi Obuasi area is a very hilly and forested area with RLs as high as 600m if you have poor visibility in that area it could affect your flight negatively.
