I recently applied to be an adjunct Professor at a university here in the US. Right from the start during my processing, the school started calling me "Professor" and told me straight up that I am a professor with them and should start seeing and calling myself as such. You see, GTEC's stance is definitely problematic because in the US, the lecturer even with a master's degree is referred to as a professor by his students and the academic board mostly referred to as "Faculty" which again could mean something different in other countries. GTEC is targeting people, and they need to cut the bullshit. Somebody could be called even Dr. for various reasons and that's it. GTEC should just stick to what is expected of them and stop their acts of trying to disgrace people for the wrong reasons. Dr. Ayensu in this case is an Adjunct Professor according to the US standards but you called her a parttime lecturer in your write-up and explanation for calling her out. That parttime lecturer phrase does not exist in the US and when you're applying for that position in an US University, it is called an "ADJUNCT PROFESSOR" position whether you like it or not. GTEC, get it together...PLEASE!

I do agree with you. Translations of academic positions from one jurisdiction to other jurisdictions can distort their meaning. In Denmark, assistant professor is called "Adjunkt" and an associate professor is "Lektor".

You see how it will be meaningless within the North American university system. The GTEC is only trying to interpret her Adjunct Professor within the Ghanaian system, which is really a part time lecturer.

I don't see any problem as in North American Adjunct Professorship, by definition is non-tenure and in some universities attracts no salary; though you can still contribute to student development be it teaching or supervising graduate research.

While I don't totally disagree with your main point, it bears noting that the proliferation of the use of academic and professional titles among the illiterate in Ghana is becoming troublesome. Now, we have rich people in Ghana who literally pay for the bestowment of honorary doctorates; and the more there are, the better. We have people calling themselves Dr., Dr., Dr. Kwame Despite or Dr., Dr., Kwasi Sarpong. This whole ideology emanates from our respect for the title, though those bearing the title--legitimate or honorary--have done nothing to advance the country. Even someone who has gone through rigorous academic work for three doctorates in the West wouldn't preface their names with 3 Dr's. It's about time the country does something about that.

Sorry, nowhere in the US does an An adjunct professor equate an Assistant Professor . Professorial titles are awarded based on academic publications, merit. An adjunct professor is a part time lecturer, it's just the title of the position which GTEC is right in its equivalent as a lecturer. Being called an Adjunct Professor doesn't mean you're equal in title to an Assistant Professor or Associate Professor.

It's different if you're a retired professor, or had already earned the title of a professor elsewhere before you became an adjunct.

Let's not deceive people here. There are different scenarios. In this case GTEC is right.

GTEC is doing a fantastic job of sanitizing the Ghanaian society that’s saturated with fake academic degrees and titles. It’s not true that in the USA anyone who teaches at a university earns the title professor. One has to go through a continuous assessment of one’s publications, grants, teaching, and service for period of not less than 5 years before a promotion to Associate Professor. A similar assessment is undertaken before one is promoted to a full professor position. The entire process takes not less than 15 years. These assessments have departmental, college, and external components. All these components must agree on the promotion at each level. Adjunct professors are part-time lecturers who don’t have any foothold in the tenure system and can never be promoted as full professors.
