Let us get this straight. The way people are called Professors in the USA is different from Ghana. Some people at the USA call me Professor Karikari. These include my students and people that I worked with at the High School and the University. Some people also call me Mr. Karikari. I respond to all of them and they are acceptable.
I also have some students that I taught in Ghana and have come to teach here who choose to call me Bro Frank or Uncle Frank as my students called me when I taught them in Ghana because of my very young age then. I respond to any of them. When I am about to give up a Speech in Public, I don’t introduce myself with any Title. I simply introduce myself with my name without any Title. Let the Ghana system come with a clear cut standard that can be used and become acceptable to all Ghanaians. Let us make it that IF YOU GO TO ROME, YOU DO WHAT THE ROMANS DO. What is most important on the Political Terrain is HONESTY. If Ghanaians can be a little honest to themselves instead of bigger Academic Titles, the place will be a better place to be. Let Ghana come out with very acceptable standards. As a matter of fact, we shamefully have some Ghanaians who have not written a single simple Research Paper or Review of any work in Academia but go around and bundle the Titles PhD and Professor on themselves. If Ghanaians don’t want that, let us have a way of banning them so that all such Titles can be awarded after traversing through a certain terrain of the Academic Field. Don’t let us then give them out like KOLIKO.

I agree with you on most parts of what you wrote.

Those who come to the UK from, Eastern Europe to study referred to to us Professor. It doesn't matter if you have a PhD or not. Therefore, i was called a Prof which i was not comfortable with.

I always asked them not to call me a Prof as i was even not interested in research research research writing papers all my life but more interested in Consultancy.

Now, how is Professorship conferred on people in the contemporary world? Its not only due to the number of papers published. It has moved to the contribution people make to a speciality maybe, due to the persons professional position held over some considerable number of years.

I worked in academia with a gentleman who was a police officer for considerable number of years and after retirement, the university employed him to teach in the Law department. Note that he didn't even have a Masters degree. Looking back, will he know much more about Justice, Law and Order than the academics who have been in the classroom and just walk behind a court room or a prison a few times in their lives?

Who can predict the trajectory of of civil disorder better? Who is better placed to predict the pattern of crimes based on practical knowledge than those who have produced papers over their career?

It is not difficult to answer these questions.

There is a trend in Europe where PhDs are taking a professional twist. So we have Professional PhDs coming up. Even Kings College London which is rated very high in the world is transforming a lot of their teaching to practical teaching and Professorship is conferred on their teachers through the path. Who else?

She is a disgrace. She was caught red handed lying on her CV. In the US, there are 3 levels of professorship:

Full Prof: a highly intellectually accomplished educator, who is fully tenured (lifetime employment at his institution).

Associate prof: an extraordinary professor with innovative research on his academic record who is on track to become full professor within 7/8 years. If by 6th year he/she is not progressing as expected, the associate prof title is relinquished.

Assistant Prof: an educator - usually young - at a full university, who has so much potential he/she that he is brought in as tenured-track prof because of his research prowess, and if he proves himself worthy is elevated to associate prof within 7 rears. None progress may lead to loss of tenure track.

All others are just lecturers, but may be called prof by students as a courtesy. They are usually called by, say Dr Obeng, because they usually have PhD.

There is a last category where an educator works with students in the laboratory or clinic, no classroom teaching mostly, those are not professors, rather lecturers, which applied in this Dr Grace Ayensu-Danquah’s case. Her institution confirmed she was not a professor, but she insisted on putting professor on her CV. Na lie.

You believe the chew and pour system of the ghanaian education is better than the US hands on system, where even elementary school teachers have to possess a college degree and a license, that license that Ghana is currently about to get rid of.

We sit in Ghana and make unfounded claims about systems elsewhere. I am an educator, and I know that I cannot handle the rigor of pre-university education in the States, although with my eyes closed, I will teach and have my students making A's in the same pre-university stage in Ghana.

All persons who legitimately hold the title of professors are at the peak of their careers, the highest rank, for a university teacher. In the US, you are hired as assistant professor, which in other systems, are junior lecturers, or lecturer I and II. That's the British system. Like honorary doctors, assistant professors in the US system cannot describe themselves as if they went through the ranks, from associate to full professorships.

Then there is the adjunct professor, which in the US, refers to a part time lecturer. Such a part time lecturer at times described as adjunct assistant professor, has no rank, cannot and should not call themselves as professors. THAT IS DISHONESTY. THIS WOMAN IS A SHAM.

As a medical doctor you have at least spent the same number of years required the a PhD in other fields of study. If you are a PhD or Med. Dr. that's enough achievement to be recognized. The title professor is a rank in academia. Its attained by appointment or promotion based on your research productivity. Once you resign from the job you become a former. If you chose not pursue academic career after PhD it doesn't deminish your degree any bit. Why does she want to be called a professor when she's not serving that role? Even some active service professors prefer to be addressed Dr. because in some jurisdictions MSc/MA/MPhil holders can rise to the rank of a professor. So what is this euphoria about? Especially when you can't prove the title!

This is nothing but an attempt to downplay the hard work of a woman who has clearly proven herself. Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah is a qualified medical doctor, and that did not come from any “soft system.” If the American system were so easy, every Ghanaian who traveled there would have come back as a surgeon but we all know that’s not the case.
Dragging someone’s primary or secondary school results is petty. Intelligence is not measured by a teenage report card but by the life of impact one builds. She has saved lives, built a career, and earned respect internationally I that is not something you can reduce with careless talk. Instead of throwing stones at her achievements, maybe ask yourself why you, with all your supposed brilliance back then, are not where she is today.

You seem extremely confused. Stop reading junk. The information I share here is first hand, and I can tell you have been trying to make sense from what you read.

Let me ask you, even if the time for adjunct teaching is waived, on what grounds is it going to be waived, for a professorship? What makes you think that one can ever get promoted as an adjunct? In the US, you can only get promoted if you are tenure track, which adjuncts are not because they are part time and not entitled to promotion.

Don't confuse term faculty with adjunct. Term faculty are full time but on tenure track. Unlike adjunct faculty, term can get on tenure track, and their time spent may be considered for promotion purposes. Adjuncts cannot get this because they teach less than the full time faculty,

Lecturers, adjunct instructors could not become associate professors unless they are first put on tenure-track as assistant professor. Full Tenure is a lifetime professorship. The main benefit is they cannot be fired. Maybe a murder conviction could change that, but that would still not be easy, since most professors are highly protective of that privilege. They would strike if a tenured professors is mishandled. This lady was not even an assistant professor. She was at best an adjunct instructor, which is a low-level part-time instructor. In the US, not all instructors can put professor in front of course materials distributed to students. Most will just state: Instructor: Dr Ed Johnson, for example. Prof is a highly distinguished title in academia, that is often misused by ignorants outside campuses. Or by students as a courtesy.

Dr Ayensu was probably Assistant professor but thought Ghanain don't know the system in USA and added Professor to her name. In Ghana and UK, the progression is Lecturer, Senior lecturer, Associate Professor and full Professor. In USA and India etc you start as Aßistant Professor, then progress to Associate Professor and full Professor. In all places you add Professor to your name only when you reach Associate Professor NOT Assistant Professor status.

Because in Ghana the first rank in a faculty career is Lecturer. In the US the first rank is Assistant Professor. The second rank in Ghana is Snr.Lectuer and in the US the second Rank is Associate Professor. In Ghana the third rank is Associate Professor and the third Rank in the US is a full Professor. The fourth rank in GHANA is a full Professor which is the third rank in the US. JINAPOR are you telling a full Professor in the US who comes to Ghana to call himself an associate Professor? Various countries and what they do.Although the last rank in the US is Ghana last but one rank, the US professorial ranking goes beyond a full Professor. For example in Harvard there is a designation or rank University Professor. Pay attention to the capital U and capital P. There are only 25 professors in Harvard who are so dedicated. Your University, where you are an academic staff or a research staff must send your papers to at least three assessors outside your university, including international ones, for them to assess your contribution in publications, teaching, community service per your university's criteria and agree that you deserve the title Professor. If no institution has conferred the title on you formally, I am sorry, you are not a Professor.

Besides, the school she taught at claimed she was an adjunct assistant professor, which means she was a part time lecturer, and part time lecturers are not qualified to be promoted. Note that first time professors are hired at the assistant professor level, an indication of a rookie status. In the US, every lecturer is addressed by students as professor, but in reality, she did not rise to that level.

As someone who had to work so hard and be vetted for both promotions to the associate and full professor ranks, I feel offended by her actions. It is like if you are Director General when you retire or leave you are called former director general. Professor is not an academic degree so if you leave you are a former Professor of English or mathematics or sociology. Like Kissinger, he was a professor in the university but he became a politician he was Dr Kissinger. A medical doctor cannot be a Professor no matter how much he rides until he chooses to teach in the university then he can rise through promotion to become a professor. A lot of people who trained abroad some years ago were awarded "Diplomas" which were even equivalent to master's Degrees, way higher than the British "Diplomas" and yet were treated inferior by their colleagues who had 'only' bachelor's degrees. Different countries have different interpretation of the academical titles they issue, so GTEC boss please find something better to do than arguing about such unnecessary nonsense, haven't you anything more useful to do? If not, please vacate your post and let more serious take your place! Talk about how to solve the schools under trees better!!!!

The issue facing Dr Ayensu is not comparison of her CV to the CV of the GTEC boss. THE ISSUE IS WHETHER SHE IS ENTITLED TO USE THE TITLE PROF.
I believe the lady listened to political advice ie to deflect attention from the original issue. She is relatively a novice in politics, so she must have sought advice from somewhere as to what damage limitation technique to apply.

However, it seems it has seriously backfired on her. A doctors must know logic and the application of logic. hence people are now questioning her level of intelligence as well as her right to use the title Prof. She has gone from frying pan to fire due to bad advice.

Dr Grace Ayensu is backing herself into a difficult corner, she is a medical doctor and trained surgeon, nobody disputes that.

However she is not “a full professor at the University of Utah school of medicine with many publications, too numerous to count”—-(in her words”). That is a figment of her imagination. The Utah university even disputes that.

On her issue of “lets’s compare CVs”, she should have enough sense to realise that the person she is daring is not in the same subject field as her, and hence their academic track progression may not necessarily be the same.

Lastly comparing like to like, Dr. Grace Ayensu should rather compare herself to Dr Thelma Wright, a professor of anaesthesiology and pain medicine @ the University of Maryland who has several peer reviewed publications (check google scholar).
Both are Ghanaians, female doctors, all educated in the USA, both within the same age range.

The two Ghanaian female doctors placed side by side will open the eyes of Ghanaians as to which of them is a doctor, academic and properly designated professor. I leave sensible, intelligent Ghanaians to make that judgement themselves. Argument closed.
