Ghana health services, the most incompetent health service in the world. Nurses’ lack of respect for patients and human dignity is the main attribute of the service. I have witnessed them watching TV when patients are dying and seen young female nurses talking to their grandparents patients as if they don’t deserve to live. If you haven’t encountered the behaviours of the health service in Ghana, God bless you. We need a serious behaviour change, from arrogance to properly caring for patients.

Ghanaian attitude to healthcare is the problem, until the patient is at the crescendo of death and gasping or has vomited for 20 times at least, hospital will be the last on the list and when your patient is brought in, you want nurses to have a magic wand like Obinim to just say wake up and walk. Medications will take time to have their effects and while those medications are still running, you want nurses to stand guard around your patient when there are 20 more waiting to be seen.

It’s the government you should be attacking and not nurses. How I wish it is possible for each person to have a mandatory clerical job of just entering vitals for patients at the ER for two weeks during national service and you will see what the whole system is about.

In the case of multiple emergencies at the same time the hospital receiving the bull of emergencies must re- route some of the emergencies to the nearby hospitals to ease the congestion on the receiving hospital. That will require the availability and readiness of ambulance vehicles but sadly Ghana health services lack adequate and functioning ambulances. In cases where the ambulances are available, they may not have fuel in them. Then there is also the unprofessional attitude of some of the medical staff who treat patients and the relatives with disrespect. Nurses and doctors in Ghana are so arrogant and will not tolerate patients and their relatives asking questions about the treatment they are receiving. The minister of health must ensure that every hospital displays the patient’s bill of rights so that patients will be acquainted with their basic rights while receiving medical treatment. As much as it is an abomination to assault a medical staff , some of their behavior and attitudes are the causes of the behavior of some patients and their families towards them . Imagine an accident patient being brought into the hospital when a doctor and nurses are present but will not attend to the patient because they have ended their shift and waiting for the relieving staff to come in . This situation happened some years back and imagine how the relatives of the patient would have reacted to this in our recent time .

Ridge Hospital is one of the most useless hospitals in Ghana. Anyone who has visited this hospital will attest to this. My father was on admission there and when they took his blood sample, they put it in a pvc handglove to pick a slip, go to the bank to make payment before handing it over to the lab. By the time, we got to the lab, the blood had clotted sue to long queue at the payment point. We had to come back again and go through the same process

That said , I am sorry for what happened to the nurse and wish her a quick recovery.
