When Bloomberg proclaimed the cedi to be the best performing currency, that was based primarily on the results of a single quarter, from April to June. Similarly, Bloomberg reporting that the cedi is the worst performer is based on results from July to September. No need for a long explanation. If the Government and the BOG are able to halt the slide of the cedi, Bloomberg will report that too.

Working on the messages sent to the markets is a tool used by Central Banks and governments around the globe. Usually complemented by other factual activities and tools, when it gets important to stabilize a currency under pressure. And the Cedi is under pressure for weeks already.

This article has been placed strategically by its authors on Monday morning of an immensely decisive week when the forex markets either regain confidence in the Cedi or sink deeper into a speculation driven phase causing an open run on the USD.

No Central Bank in the world has the firepower to stop a run away from its own currency. Something like Mexico in the 1980 - 1990ties, a much bigger economy than Ghana.

So far we have seen mostly the real demand by importers of goods trying to secure future needed funds at the lowest possible exchange rate. Now speculation will jump the train building forex demand artificially. BoG has no other choice but watching on the sidelines until the extra demand wears out.

If it is not true, I think the proper authorities to address the issue is the Bank of Ghana (BOG) or Ministry of Finance., NOT Ghanaweb. We praised and congratulated the BOG when the cedi was doing great as the best in the world. Now it is not.
