  The reason countries like South Korea and Taiwan grew from being economically equal to Nigeria into a level comparable to Europe in one generation, was export. The bank of Ghana's costly attempts to strengthen the Cedi impedes export. Even things that could easily have been made in Ghana, like furniture, kitchen utensils and tools, are largely imported, because the Cedi is held artificially strong. In order to stimulate exports, South Korea for many years kept it's currency artificially low, at one point having the world's biggest gold reserves.
