Ghanaian Youth Voice Discontent Over Government’s Failure to End Galamsey

Accra, Ghana — October 9, 2025

The Youth Association of Ghana has expressed growing concern over the government’s continued inability to end illegal small-scale mining, popularly known as GALAMSEY.

In a statement released this week, the group criticized both the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration and the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) government for failing to deliver on promises to eliminate the practice, which continues to cause severe environmental degradation across the country.

The association recalled that former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo once vowed to end galamsey even if it meant putting his presidency on the line. However, according to the group, the situation worsened under his leadership, a factor they believe contributed to the NPP’s electoral defeat 2024.

Turning to the current NDC administration, the youth pointed out that President John Dramani Mahama also pledged to address illegal mining with the same determination that ended the dumsor energy crisis in 2015. Yet, after nearly nine months in office, the group says illegal mining remains at its peak.

> “If President Mahama fails to resolve the galamsey menace as he did with dumsor, the youth of Ghana will be deeply disappointed in both the NPP and the NDC,” the statement read. “At that point, young people will be compelled to look for an alternative political force that genuinely prioritizes environmental protection and the future of our nation.”

Environmental experts have consistently warned about the long-term effects of galamsey, including pollution of major rivers, destruction of arable lands, and loss of biodiversity. Despite numerous anti-galamsey task forces and policy interventions over the years, the practice remains widespread.

The Youth Association’s statement adds to the growing public pressure on the Mahama administration to take decisive and transparent action against illegal mining operators, regardless of their political affiliations

I saw and heard in a video one of the family members gave to a You Tuber in their hometown that the family have never set sights on Odo Broni, and they don't know who she is even though they heard about her in the news. On the other hand they mentioned Serwaa as the woman they know as Daddy Lumba's wife, and she attended the funeral of Daddy Lumba's mother when she died. The key requirement is that the parties have not lived as husband and wife for a continuous period of at least five years immediately before a divorce petition is filed.
Key Points about Separation in Ghana
Ground for Divorce: A separation period of five years without living as a couple is a legal ground for proving that a marriage has broken down beyond reconciliation, according to the Matrimonial Causes Act, 1971 (Act 367).
Not Automatic Termination: The marriage does not automatically become illegitimate; a court must be petitioned and satisfied that the marriage has broken down to grant a divorce.

They may have been separated, but the court in Ghana will have decide if Lumba's customary marriage to Broni is legal, considering that his marriage to Serwaa took place in Germany and no dissolution was in effect at the time of his passing. The case isn't as simple as it may appear just because Lumba publicly held out Broni to be his wife. Ghana law students should follow this case, for it will have implications on those who get into civil marriages abroad and then return to Ghana and enter into customary marriages without first dissolving their overseas civil marriages.

Furthermore, those two may have been married in Germany, but Lumba returned to Ghana and established residency in Ghana, and eventually getting into a customary marriage with Broni. The case is complicated, and the courts will have to navigate carefully since Ghana law recognizes marriages entered into in foreign countries. Thus, since the law in Germany will not recognize Lumba's customary marriage in Ghana because he was still wed to Serwaa, the court will have to side with Serwaa, for they were still married even though but living separate lives at the time of Lumba's death. Had Lumba's first marriage taken place in Ghana, then Serwaa would have a hard time disqualifying Broni as a legitimate surviving spouse. The court will have to take into consideration if the law in Germany disallows Lumba and Serwaa from legally marrying others without obtaining a divorce. Lumba may have claimed to to have engaged in a customary marriage to Broni, but it's very likely that the Ghana courts will look into international law to determine the legality of Lumba's marital status with Broni at the time of his death. Though Lumba held Broni out as his wife, the court may think differently if it is to apply the marital laws of Germany in deciding the case. The laws in Ghana many permit polygamous marriages, but in the eyes of the marital laws where Lumba and Serwaa were married and never divorced at the time of his death, Lumba may be considered a bigamist, thereby nullifying his customary marriage to Broni.

However, the reality of the matter is that Lumba married you under German law, which cannot apply in Ghana. If the body were in Germany, then the courts in Germany could have granted you the sole widowhood rights. In Ghana, Daddy Lumba did not marry under the ordinance, which does not recognize polygamy. Therefore, his marriage could be assumed to be under a customary marriage that recognizes polygamy. Hence, the woman in Ghana could claim widowship rights, unless there are issues that we are unaware of, which would solidify your argument. I am sorry you may lose this one.

Daddy Lumba had a medical condition that he needed someone to be by him to make him live comfortably since he chose to live in Ghana because of his profession. Lumba and Akosua Serwaa were a married couple with children and property/properties in Germany that need to be taken care of and managed. If you have the experience of having children overseas, you would understand their marriage arrangement. Akosua Serwaa had to work to raise their children and pay mortagages and insurance on their properties. Akosua Serwaa had to work and earn money to buy the medicines Daddy Lumba needed to live and not die. He would have been dead long time ago if Akosua Serwaa was not providing him with his medicines. Odo Broni's presence with Daddy Lumba was essential to make life comfortable for Lumba hence Akosua Serwaa agreed to the situation. It's Odo Broni who needs to be less greedy and be on good terms with Akosua Serwaa to honor Lumba. Obviously she is being influenced by an opportunist to take the path she and Lumba's family head has taken because Lumba's other family members in their hometown mentioned they have never seen Odo Broni, and they only know Akosua Serwaa as Lumba's wife
