The Akan Matrilineal System is Traditional or Customary. It doesn’t take precedence over legal inheritance when that is the wish of the Benefactor. Often, critics who happen to be patrilineal and have no understanding of its legitimacy throw false narratives about. On the other side, it is also abused sometimes by relatives within the Extended Family who insist on very rigid interpretation. A solution would be an explicit statement like we are seeing in the late Kantaka’s case. While alive, he named his heir so there’s no two ways about it. It may further carry weight if Kantanka took legalisation measures.

For the living spouse and children, one helpful way is to bond well with members of the Extended Family. No Uncle or Nephew will come kicking you out of your late Husband or Father’s house if you recognised them as family all along. When relatives are treated bad, they seek revenge later. In conclusion, we in the Matrilineal System should endeavour to sort things out about the next gen before death comes out of the blue. We should clearly state what goes to Wife and Children and what’s for the Extended Family. If possible, call your Abusuapanin and have your wishes documented.

It could have been real estate, farm, precious minerals, established business, etc. The Matrilineal System ensures some form of payback. The profit could have been used to take care of wife and children but the inheritance stays within the (Extended) Family. It means that the Asantehene, for example, can send his children to the best schools and set up his wife financially well. The priceless gold ornaments and Manhyia Palace stay within the Abusua.

The maternal family succession is ceremonial and represent mere continuation of blood ties. It does not necessarily and automatically translates into taking over assets and businesses of the deceased.

The other symbolic part of the family members succession is to take care of the children of the deceased if they are still underage untill they become adults to take care of themselves
