Alan Kyerematen’s New Party Redefines Ghana’s Political Landscape

In recent years, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has drawn criticism from some members who claim the party has become centered around family connections, close associates, and loyalists.

Amid this internal discontent, former Trade and Industry Minister Alan Kyerematen has announced the formation of the United Party Plus (UPP). The new political organization aims to bring together members and supporters who feel sidelined within the NPP structure.

The move has effectively created two identifiable factions within Ghana’s center-right political space: one aligned with President Akufo-Addo and his supporters — informally referred to by some observers as the “Nana People’s Party” — and the other around Kyerematen’s emerging United Party Plus platform.

Political analysts say this development could reshape voter dynamics ahead of future elections, potentially dividing the traditional NPP base and introducing new competition within the broader liberal-conservative movement in Ghana.

As much as I like the Asantehene very much, the state needs to be careful not to put the country’s structure under the King. Ghana is a republic and this includes the Ashanti region. However, the King has a very important role to play in our society and this must continue. And let’s give him the due respect. As a non Ashanti, I am one of those who think the Asantehene is an asset to the country and we can all be proud of the rich history the kingdom contributed in the past. My only concern is that, Ghana is united under one government and one constitution so that must continue although there’s also room for the Asantehene to play a role.

Dotcom, I am a Fanti and I believe your fears are misplaced. No one is trying to put Ghana under Asantihene. The latter is a good man and has done a lot for Ghana, and Bagbin is just acknowledging that.
