Often, we get caught up in our own struggles and small stories, forgetting our place in the larger story arc — how our actions, choices, and achievements can and will blaze trails for those who come after us, so they do not have to spend their time and energy re-fighting the same battles.

Certainly, we walk a spiral path, but for generations of women, the spirals were so tightly packed that it seemed they were going in circles. Let us blaze trails so that the path we walk covers wider and wider swaths of human experience.

Trail blazing is what we do when we find ourselves in the wilderness, with no path to guide us but our own intuitive understanding of nature and our destination. Sometimes, we must walk through the night, guided only by the stars. We know when to sit and rest, to shelter from storms, when to gather water, and what on the trail will sustain us— and what will do us harm. We are courageous and cautious in equal measure, but we are driven forward, not only by our own desire to reach our destination but also by the wish to leave a viable way for others who follow.

Rawlings was simply evil, murdering as many as he could. In the end, he embodied the corruption of those he killed for being "corrupt." In all of this, Nana Kunadu wasnt an innocent bystander; the Jezebel of our time did her thing alongside her murderous husband.

For years, I harbored a deep hatred for this couple because my uncle, a member of the erstwhile Supreme Military Council, fell prey to Rawlings/Kunadu's murderous rampage. In the few years leading to, and since Rawlings' death, my hatred for the couple began to soften. Why? Our new leaders exhibited a new scale of corruption, leading the corrupt Rawlings to publicly voice his concerns. If a corrupt and murderous chap like Rawlings could complain about corruption of leaders that came after him, that is all I need to say.

Our traditional rulers, in particular Asantehene, are hand-in-hand with our political elites robbing our country. Putting aside youngsters who know nothing about our history, can anybody cite just one example of any of the Asantehenes of the past who was insulted or publicly denigrated for his evil ways? I'm old enough to have witnessed the tenure of other Asantehenes: each one of them was highly respected by both young and adults, rich and the poor.

However, today, we have a thief with girlfriends and mansions across the globe, supported by galamsey and padded envelopes from our political elites. He says he is so powerful that he isn't subject to our constitution; yet he also says he is powerless to stop the menace of galamsey, which is causing babies to be born deformed, and sending people en masse to the hospital--killing many of them.

If the Whiteman though this thief called Asantehene was worthy of being banned from his country, it baffles the mind that only the Blackman would think it was a good idea to make the same thief a chief and his overlord. And we wonder why the Whiteman is light-years ahead of the Blackman?

Yes, they have been paying to others during funerals so it becomes their turn when a very close family member dies.. If you don’t have money, don’t marry a Kwahu person who is rich and influential. As for the Fantes, they go to the funerals with their children and their wives and husbands to go and eat. Yes. And they even take some of the served food home for the DAY AFTER. I know because I married a Fante for decades and know much about them.
Hahahaha. The Akyem pay substantially but by the time they leave the funeral grounds, all Palm Wine and ODOKA drinks are gone.
And with the Anlo Ewes, the bereaved family should have many Gallons of AKPETESHIE around. The mourners don’t go back home until all the APIO Gallons are empty. If you don’t believe me, ask the Tsikata and Agbolosoo families. They even CUT some APIO before coming to class to teach, and after Lunch Break. Hah. That is the truth.

My understanding with these circumstances where a prominent person passes away is that a funeral committee is set up as soon as possible. Then scheduled dates are set for people to go and sign a book of condolences.

There is a day for top political person, foreign dignitaries, then the general public. The crying woman should relax small. They can't allow all the 33 million Ghanaians to go in at this time.

And for the record, I am old, probably old enough to be your mom, but never saw a Ghanaian grieving moment in any culture where they mourned in silence. I am also speaking on authority because I study and teach cultural issues. Under no circumstance should they have asked her to leave. The best they could have done was to give her a place to sit and let her know they were having discussions and would PLEAD with her to hold her pain, for the moment. She would understand, notice the atmosphere didn’t call for that, and shut up or leave.

If this helps, when I first read the story, I even thought she must have been a thief who wanted to get closer to the family to make away with something. I experienced that in my family before, and even that, I have become so conscious of the impact of embarrassment that I wouldn’t recommend this treatment under any circumstance.

Overhere in the US, I have attended so many funerals for our Ghanaian community and most of my co-workers who are not Ghanaians. We don't do that here. Mourning the death comes from within. You may shed tears which is normal. But you can't go to the funeral home and act like you're mad. They will throw you out. She just went there to seek attention, that's all. Go to your family and cry anyway you like, you can even roll on the ground as some people do....nobody cares. But this is a civil funeral, well respected citizen of the country, and we should give her the respect she deserves.
