  This has always been my worry. Now every land is being sold for buildings and I wonder if there will be a piece of land in Ghana after fifty years. Is that how other countries even with more population than Ghana are doing. The funny thing is that there are no places earmarked for recreation, health centre, refuse collection point, police station etc. Government needs to step in otherwise there won’t be any land in the next fifty years especially in the southern parts of the country.

  As experienced as this retired public servant may be, unfortunately, she does not seem to know the full background story of the East Legon area. I believe that if we go into the archives, a more revealing history may be accessed in documentary form to define the real and exciting history of Accra.
  
  What I know, which in any case is also subject to revision, is that, because that whole East Legon enclave gently descends into a valley-like terrain, the colonial authorities - long before independence, placed a ban on the use of that area for residential development. In their estimation, if ever one of those terrible tropical rainstorms that happened occasionally took place, the entire place would become uninhabitable.
  
  Because of this, the Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah in his replanning schemes to make Accra one of the greatest cities in the world, therefore decided to expanded the Accra International airport runway to extend all the way through the East Legon vicinity into what would have eventually resulted into the biggest airport as well as corporate and leisure airport village in the world - even in the sixties. Can we even begin to imagine this ambition in the terms of even the massive possibilities of today? Of course, the little minds of political whores who could not comprehend nor apprise themselves to imagine the extra-human capacity, the parahuman vision and the near extraterrestrial aspirations of the great man, spoilt it all for Ghana, Africa and the world.
  
  Now Madina. Madina, in similar fashion as Ashaiman, Accra New Town, Kasoa etc, evolved as migrant settlements. However in the special case of Madina, the great man, the Osagyefo, had reached agreement with the settlers of Accra New Town to relocate to Madina where each household had been allocated a reasonable portion of land and a soft loan to start life afresh. The process of relocation had begun to slowly pick up when the curse of the 1966 coup was inflicted upon Ghana, Africa and the civilized democratic world.
  
  Now to put things into proper perspective, the Accra New Town settlement area was where Kwame Nkrumah and his astute team of extraordinary young African technocrats had designed what he then described as a city within a city - a current Dubai kind of ultra-modern development that would in the same manner make Accra, Ghana and Africa shine to the rest of the world in the sixties.
