  In ransomware, the hackers will encrypt (make it human-unreadable) your entire system or very important data, so that you cannot use it. Then they demand you pay certain amount (mostly in cryptocurrency) into some accounts, that are simply not traceable, before they will decrypt your system/data. For private person, they may scan your computer and get some of your naked photos (if any) and then demand you pay otherwise they will publish those photos on the internet.
  
  But honestly, the amount of US$120,000 was just peanuts and certainly the hackers were amateurs. Profi hackers deal in millions, depending on victim institution. In the case of a hospital in Europe, they demanded over 10 Million Euros: either pay or the entire hospital become lame, useless and be closed. The hospital paid, but only made the case known only after they had paid.
  
  Finally, know that the hackers may not even come from Ghana: most of them are based in the far-east.

  Again richer banks have more money to put in measures to reduce the chances to be hacked, whereas weaker banks may not have enough to acquire the necessary security hardware/software and also employ cyber ...

  If you are a prominent individual, I'll friendly advise you to use very strong passwords (at least 10 chars long, including numbers, capital letters and printable characters like _,- ...).
  
  Never CLICK on links in your mails or even on whatsapp links.
  
  After downloading any file attachment, run an anti-virus to check of any possible virus infection ...... and many more.
