The Director of Field Operations for the United Party, Hopeson Adorye, has argued that any serious effort to curb corruption in Ghana must first begin with the prosecution of former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta.
He maintained that Ofori-Atta is the central figure in many cases currently under investigation in the country.

Speaking to GhanaWeb during a picket at the premises of the US Embassy in Accra, on January 20, 2026, Adorye noted that although several individuals are being investigated, Ofori-Atta remains the key decision-maker whose actions must be scrutinised first.
“If we want to curtail corruption in this system, let us deal with Ofori-Atta first, then the rest will follow.
“He [Ken Ofori-Atta] is not the only person. There are many others who are involved in the charges that they are pursuing against him. They are there under investigations and they'll go before the law court,” Adorye asserted.
He stressed that Ofori-Atta’s position as finance minister placed him at the centre of all major economic decisions, making his accountability critical.
“So, if you, Ofori-Atta, the ultimate, you give approval and you decide not to come then it means there is something wrong. The ultimate is Ken Ofori-Atta,” he stressed.
Adorye insisted that prosecuting Ofori-Atta would naturally pave the way for accountability, among others like Ernest Akore who is connected to the case, while dismissing claims that certain individuals may have been shielded.
“When we get Ofori-Atta, Akore will come. Attorney General is pursuing all. He's not left Akore out of the extradition thing. No, he's part of it but the focus now is Ken Ofori-Atta,” he said.
Hopeson Adorye further explained that Ofori-Atta’s oversight role over key state institutions makes his case fundamental to the broader fight against corruption.
He also alleged that individuals linked to the controversial Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML) arrangement had close ties to Ofori-Atta.
Describing the situation as systemic, Adorye said authorities must pursue the matter to its logical end.
“He was in charge of the economy. Minister of Finance, BOG, GRA, all of them work under you. The people who constitute the membership of SML, you could see [were] close allies of Ken Ofori-Atta. They were working for GRA but resigned to be members of SML. It's a grand scheme and we need to pursue it to its final conclusion,” he concluded.

The picket, organised by Arise Ghana, drew dozens of people to the premises of the US Embassy, where they pressed authorities to facilitate the return of Ofori-Atta to Ghana.
