  I totally agree with you. The IGP is grossly abusing his power by promoting officers performing personal services for the asantehene. The IGP needs a strong talking to from the President.

  Is the Police Service the only institution in Ghana? He should simply stop this kind of practice, or else other chief executive officers of state institutions should start promoting people.
  People are working hard to uplift the image of their institutions, but they always go through a thorough and rigorous promotion process before being promoted.

  Something is fundamentally wrong in Ghana. To begin with when did Akwasidae become a national celebration with Police Officers transported from Accra to Kumasi to form a guard of honor for the Asantehene and a Police Band entertaining the guests? Where in our national constitution was it stated that there should be a "Police Royal Ladies Corp" for the Asantehene? How much did it cost the Ghanaian tax payer to transport and house all those Police Officers who went to celebrate the Akwasidae in Kumasi? Is service to the Asantehene now a basis for promotion in the Police Service? Why should Police Officers who are not Ashantis be forced to pay allegiance to the Asantehene (by marching) when he sits in state at Akwasidae? Ghana is a multi ethnic country and no ethnic group should be imposed on the others. We should be very careful with how we approach ethnically related issues in the country. Remember that the conflicts and civil wars that we have seen in many African countries had an ethnic undertone and Ghana is not immune from finding itself in such a situation if we are not careful with how we address ethnically related matters. Finally, when are the numerous other female Police Officers (who are out there doing a good job) but who did not participate in the Akwasidae celebration going to get their promotion?

  What the IGP did was a typical example of how poor leadership can cause tension and friction in an organization. People should not be promoted for mounting guard of honor for the Asantehene. Besides, do we now have two Heads of State in Ghana? What is going on? What is now unfolding will never happen under the leadership of Kwame Nkrumah or Jerry Rawlings. This development should stop as soon as possible. The Asantehene is for the Ashantis and should not be imposed on the other ethnic groups in Ghana. Those who are not Ashantis (or Akans) don't celebrate Akwasidae.

  Ghana is a republic. That statement should settle every question about sovereignty, authority, and national identity. In a republic, power flows from the people, the Constitution is supreme, and the national flag stands as the highest symbol of unity and collective belonging. No emblem—cultural, political, or traditional—should ever appear to replace it.
  Yet, increasingly, it feels as though we are being asked to look away from a troubling shift.
  At some traditional state functions and celebrations, particularly high-profile ones, the flag of a kingdom appears to be substituting the national flag rather than existing alongside it in clear subordination. This is not a minor detail. Flags are not decorations; they are declarations. They communicate authority, allegiance, and sovereignty without words. When a kingdom’s flag occupies the space where the national flag should stand, the message—intentional or not—is that parallel authority is being normalized.
  This should concern all of us.
  Ghana’s chieftaincy institution is respected, protected, and deeply woven into our national fabric. The Ashanti Kingdom has contributed immensely to our history, identity, and resilience. Acknowledging this does not weaken the republic; it enriches it. But respect for tradition must never slide into symbolic replacement of the state. Culture thrives best when it exists within clear constitutional boundaries.
  The substitution of the national flag is especially dangerous because symbolism shapes perception. Over time, what we repeatedly see becomes what we accept. When citizens, especially the younger generation, grow accustomed to seeing a kingdom’s flag stand alone where the national flag should be, it subtly reshapes their understanding of sovereignty. It teaches, quietly but powerfully, that the republic is optional in certain spaces.
  This concern becomes even sharper when combined with the visible presence of national security at traditional ceremonies. National security is a republic-wide institution, funded and mandated by all Ghanaians. Its deployment should reflect national necessity, not cultural elevation. When state security appears to protect symbolism that overshadows the national flag, it deepens the perception of institutional alignment rather than neutrality.
  What makes this moment particularly significant is that this was not always the norm.
  Under the previous administration of Nana Akufo-Addo, traditional institutions were respected, but the supremacy of the republic remained visibly intact. Kingdoms celebrated their heritage without appearing to replace national symbols. The balance—though never perfect—was clearer. Today, that balance seems to be quietly shifting, and silence around it is being mistaken for consent.
  Some may argue that there is no danger, that Ghana is stable, that tradition cannot threaten democracy. History tells us otherwise. Democratic erosion rarely begins with laws being abolished; it begins with symbols being blurred and standards being relaxed. What feels harmless today becomes precedent tomorrow.
  We must therefore ask ourselves honest questions. Do we want to raise a generation that sees the national flag as secondary in parts of their own country? Do we want a republic where state institutions appear selectively deferential? Do we truly believe that power, once normalized, will never be abused?
  Ghana does not need to reject its traditions to protect its democracy. But it must draw firm lines. The national flag must always come first. Traditional symbols must exist within—not in place of—the republic. State institutions must remain visibly impartial, disciplined, and loyal to the Constitution above all else.
  If we ignore this now because it feels uncomfortable to speak, future generations may inherit a republic weakened not by force, but by our quiet acceptance of substitution.
