The government of Ghana has temporarily suspended the application process for Ghanaian citizenship by historical diasporans, the Ministry of the Interior and the Diaspora Affairs Office of the President (DAOOP) have announced.

In a public notice dated Sunday, February 1, 2026, the two institutions said the suspension forms part of a joint effort to streamline and improve the overall citizenship application process for members of the African diaspora.

According to the statement, the pause is intended to enhance the accessibility, efficiency, and user-friendliness of the process for applicants across the diaspora.

“This pause is part of a joint institutional effort to further streamline and enhance the overall experience, ensuring that the process becomes even more accessible, efficient, and user-friendly for our brothers and sisters across the diaspora,” the statement noted.

The government assured historical diasporans that the suspension does not signal a withdrawal of Ghana’s commitment to welcoming members of the global African family.

Both the Ministry of the Interior and the Diaspora Affairs Office of the President reaffirmed their dedication to strengthening ties with the diaspora and said work is underway to introduce refinements that will make future applications smoother.

The statement added that revised timelines and updated guidelines will be communicated through official channels in due course.

Authorities also expressed appreciation for the continued interest and cooperation of prospective applicants, noting that the process is expected to resume shortly.

The notice was jointly signed by the Ministry of the Interior and the Diaspora Affairs Office of the President.
