Sam was academically qualified to be recruited into the military but yet, in spite if the fact that he was initially way ahead of Rawlings by rank, he was not bold enough to reveal these allegations during the lifetime of Rawlings. All said and done, Rawlings, who the so-called General claims was not academically qualified to have been admitted into the military, became one of our best ever Air Force pilots. He also succeeded in overthrowing an inept govt together with its military top brass and becoming the Head of State and Commander in Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces.

So now you Maj. Gen. Sam, apart from your conveyor belt promotions in the army with little or no known practical achievements to point to, what did you do about the Rawlings phenomenon? Seeing the level of spite you have against Rawlings, at the very least, you could have also staged a coup to redress all the wrongs you had against Rawlings.

Only God knows how he Maj. Gen. Sam got recruited into the GAF but that notwithstanding, many, if not most people are only lucky to find employment only after being surreptitiously introduced, recommended, protocol-jumped over others, or bribing their way into employment. Who is not aware of the annual spectacle of political ambushing of the enrolment process of the GAF in particular? So why are you singling out Rawlings - and only after his demise? Cowards die many times before their deaths.

He collapsed Ghana airways , black star line and many other SOEs. He added nothing to our GDP and ghana experienced farming and people died of hunger....

He was inept pompous and extremely jealous of successful businessmen and he is the reason today ojada gets to run the red light but range rovers cant even though range and mercedes owners pay more taxes via duties.

This i think is his worst contribution to ghana and long after he died it is now a self sustaining phenomenon.

He was divisive and an anarchist.. ..he played ORs against officers.....ruining discipline, command and control.

Similarly he turned the poor majority against the wealthy minority

Bad is considerably relative in meaning if I get it right. The decision to recruit someone into the Air Force because he’s a good pilot far outweighs another to recruit someone who is academically but not practically competent.
I believe strongly that not being academically good resulted in him remaining at the junior rank level almost all his military life. He wasn’t promoted because he failed his theoretical works and was good at the practicals.
Ordinarily, I would go for someone who will give me results in practice than someone who would chew and pour, and not be productive.
You think the decision to allow Rawlings go through wasn’t a bad one that affected the nation?. I beg to differ, the decision was a good one to allow the country be served by one of the finest pilots of the time.
Rawlings staged those coups at a later time when he had seen for himself the wrongs and felt the need to right the wrongs of the time. Mind you, he wasn’t recruited to come and stage a coup but to serve his country.
The coup was a product of the future, and must be seen as two different things. I’d not in anyways say that those who lost their lives deserve to die considering the fact that life is sacred and must be protected at all times. However, we shouldn’t make Rawlings look bad, for we have become who we are today because of Rawlings.
He isn’t like others we know of on our continent. Let’s stop denigrating him and his legacy.

Again, constructed about 90% feeder roads in Ghana. In fact he introduced the feeder roads system . He sustained the country through the 1983 famine & hunger. He expanded the education system especially to the North & established university in the North. He established polytechnics in all the regions that were not having them. He introduced the HND in the polytechnic.

It is clear that the retired General is speaking out of hatred. If you assess Rawlings generally, his good was more than his bad in his administration.

At least we can get some good points & developments about Rawlings & Gen Acheampong.

To say that he wouldn't have joined the army because he failed an exam but because he was a good pilot was reason why an Air Force commander pleaded for him to be selected to join the army is sketchy. He never passed any exams to be promoted to general. Lets respect the legacy Jerry J Rawlings left for this nation Ghana. He laid the foundations for the 4th republic, plus endless more. He never picked or instructed the killing of any one. During military coups all sorts happen, and everyone blames the leader of the coup. My uncles factory that produces towels was raided at the time of AFRC workers beaten just because the truck load of soldiers who came there thought it was a storage facility for maize just because it had Millet in the company name. Everyone present on that night shift were beaten just because no one could show where the maize was. Did rawl8ngs send them. No. It took the intervention of a call to the late Major courage kwashigah to send some decent soldiers to the scene to stop that. No matter what people say Rawlings was one of the most courageous, bold and finest soldiers l can compare to the late brigadier odartey wellington. May both their souls rest in peace.

This is what is going on in the Military and the police Service, if you read the about the way Some one who was not qualified to be in the military was forced into the military because of Tribal nonsense in the Service it is still going on in both the military and the police Services when one is from the Asante tribe they will never give you the opportunity to prove your worth but if the person is Ewe, Muslim and Northerners they will recruit you either qualified or not and you will tax me to pay for their service which is not good for the country, when you come to Asante Region all the police and the military men in the region are Ewes and Northerners and their mission is to sabotage and work against the progress of the region. And we have our Leaders who are toothless bull dogs who cannot bite. If the Military and the military Recruitment Department is challenging me, and are honest to the people of Ghana they should come out and published in the State Media the names of all men and women in the Service as well as the Civil Services and to counter my claims. Even it has come to the point that the recent recruitment has a lot of Foreigners in the list, namely Fulanis, Togolese and people from the Sahel are all in the police and the military, at times I ask myself this NDC government are they really here to help the country or are hear to ruining the country. Now there is only one thing every Patriotic Ghanaians is praying for is the break up of the country. Time will tell.
