Government Spokesperson and Member of Parliament (MP) for Abura Asebu Kwamankese Constituency, Felix Ofosu Kwakye has argued that criticism of the conditions of service of MPs, especially the provision of luxury vehicles for them, is unfounded, arguing that MPs expend far more on their constituents than their earnings as MPs.

He stressed that MPs perform public duties and must be given the requisite tools that every other public servant gets.

Speaking on NewsFile on Joy News yesterday, he argued that “there is nothing that the MP gets for his own tenure that comes anywhere close to what the MP spends on the people he serves.”

He recounted an incident where, after he had heard and addressed the concerns of his constituents in the Constituency, he was left with no money at all and had to rely on his wife to be able to get fuel to return to Accra.

“I was in the Constituency one day. Everything I had on me was taken away from me. I had to call my wife to send me 500 Cedis to buy fuel to come to Accra,” he revealed.

He noted, however, that the criticism of MPs may be as a result of the lack of transparency with which they operate, noting that opening up about their work will help address the misconceptions about them.

His comments come at a time when some persons have advocated for MPs to be provided with bicycles instead of SUVs, a criticism of the apparent juicy conditions of service of MPs.
