The fact remains that the name Ghana was foreign to the ethnic groups that make up the Republic of Ghana. The name was the title of the Rulers of the Kingdom of Wagadou (refered to as the Ghana Empire), whose people were mainly the Soninke and Malinke, Mande speaking ethnic groups with no direct links to any of the ethnic groups in the Gold Coast.
Some historians generally agree that internal factors, including mismanagement and political instability, played a significant role in the decline of the medieval kingdom of Wagadou (Ghana Empire).

The politicians/academics who first sugested VOLTARIA as a name for the then colony, were on the right track, since such a name would have been a natural representation of the country (like Nigeria and Niger, named after the River Niger).

The links can be seen in the languages of the people in the Northern, Upper East and Upper West Regions that have similar roots to the Mossi language of Ouagadougu. The partition of Africa saw many tribes in these Gold areas end up in Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast and Togo. Some historical accounts have the empire as being called the Mossi-Dagomba empire, hence the closeness of the languages of Frafra, Dagar, Dagbani, Nabdam, and others, with the Mossi language of Burkina Faso. That kingdom stretched into most parts of present day Northern Region, Upper East Region and Upper West region.
