The General Secretary of the Assemblies of God, Ghana, Rev Ernest Birikorang, has indicated the church’s support of President John Dramani Mahama, following reports that the Lincoln University had withdrawn its honorary doctorate to be conferred on the president over his stance on the anti-LGBTQ+ bill currently before Parliament.

According to the church, the move rather affirms what it describes as Mahama’s firm commitment to his religious and moral convictions, particularly on the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill currently before Ghana’s Parliament.

According to a statement dated Wednesday, March 25, 2026, Rev Birikorang said the church views the development as a moment of pride rather than shame.

“From our perspective, this decision does not dishonour President Mahama. Rather, it honors him and the church, as it reflects a steadfast and uncompromising stand on matters of faith and morality,” portions of the statement said.

The statement further indicated that Mahama’s position on homosexuality, which he has previously described as forbidden by the Bible, morally unacceptable and culturally inappropriate, remains consistent.

“We recall with pride that President Mahama has clearly articulated his position on this matter and has remained resolute despite external pressures.

“There is joy among the leadership and membership of the church, as we believe he has been counted worthy to stand for what we hold as truth, even in the face of global opposition,” the statement added.

The Assemblies of God, Ghana, also encouraged its members, especially those in leadership positions, to remain firm in their beliefs.

“We urge all our members in public and private life not to compromise their spiritual principles and moral values under any circumstances,” the statement stressed.

The reported withdrawal by Lincoln University is said to be linked to Mahama’s position on the controversial anti-LGBTQ+ bill, which continues to generate debates both locally and internationally.
