President of the Ghana Institute of Architects, Tony Asare, has warned that a severe shortage of qualified professionals in Ghana’s construction space exposes a high risk in the integrity of most housing infrastructure in the country.

According to a report by myjoyonline.com on March 30, 2026, Asare disclosed that the country has only ten (10) approved architects serving all 261 District, Municipal, and Metropolitan Assemblies (MMDAs).

He described the situation as a systemic gap, saying it exposes the country to avoidable construction failures.

Accra New Town Building Collapse: Residents recount history behind structure

“We have 261 assemblies, and there are only ten architects. I am not sure they have more than twelve or twenty,” he said.

His remarks follow the recent building collapse at Accra New Town, which claimed three lives and left several others injured.

Asare noted that the absence of architects in local assemblies often leads to inadequate supervision of construction projects, allowing for substandard work by contractors.

“We have raised this issue with the various MMDAs; however, they are not compelled by law to ensure they have the full complement of architects and engineers,” he said.
