Head of Department of Community Health, University of Ghana Medical School (UGMS), Prof Benedict Nii Laryea Calys-Tagoe, has dispelled the assertion that sucking a woman’s breast cures breast cancer.

According to him, the assertion is a misconception born of minimal protection, as the sucking activity cannot cause such an effect.

He explained that regular screenings and accurate diagnosis or treatment are the best ways to prevent breast cancer or treat it.

Breast cancer cases in women predicted to rise by a third globally

Speaking at a public lecture at the University of Ghana, April 2, 2026, on the theme: “Taming the Crab: Insights into Cancer Care in Ghana,” Prof Nii Laryea clarified that sucking a woman’s breast satisfies pleasure but is not productive health-wise.

“Some of the misconceptions were the fact that one man said that he was watching TV, and in the discussions, they were told that breastfeeding by your wife would lead to the prevention of breast cancer. And so he was encouraging all men to go sucking. Ladies and gentlemen, sucking a woman's breast is not known to be productive. If it were, I'm sure we'd have a lot of young men willing to volunteer their services for free.

“This misconception stems from the minimal protection breastfeeding provides. Now, breastfeeding is known to provide a minimal degree of protection, and this protection is not from the sucking activity but rather from the hormonal changes associated with breastfeeding. So if you go sucking with no hormonal change, you are only satisfying your pleasures,” he said.
