These foreign travels apart from the photo ops, have brought us nothing since Independence. Chairman Mao of China, a reclusive, closed his borders for decades, mobilised indigenous labour and capital, at great human cost though, and when China re-emeged, it was a nuclear military power, and an emerging economic superpower. Until we cut down on waste, extravangance and corruption, and redirect our resources into productive capacity, our presidents would continue to be laughing stocks, after these artificial welcoming parades. Captain Troare of Burkina Faso, for obvious reasons, is not welcone in any western capital, yet we rely on him for tomatoes, onions and livestock.

Mahama himself accepted an invitation to a health summit in France. To make him feel special while he's around (and give him a chance to make Ghana's case for investment), Macron worked to fit in a half-hour conversation with him.

Compare this to Bola Tinubu's multiple state and working visits to France since 2024, and the reception the Elysée Palace rolls out for him every time, and you will get some idea of the "importance" of Ghana to French foreign policy.

We COULD play a key role. We aren't playing one now. But Air France crews and French diplomats will continue to find Accra a nice place to base themselves while Ouagadougou is dangerous and out of reach.
