The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has disclosed that more than 40,000 applicants have submitted entries for 7,000 available teaching vacancies under the Ghana Education Service (GES) recruitment exercise.

Speaking at the launch of e-Learning Africa, Haruna Iddrisu said although the country is grappling with a shortage of teachers nationwide, financial clearance was granted for only 7,000 applicants.

GES announces recruitment of graduate teachers

“If resources were available, we should be recruiting up to 50,000 teachers across the country, but due to budgetary constraints, we are unable to do that. The Ministry of Education received clearance from the Ministry of Finance to recruit 7,000 teachers.

"In an open, transparent manner, it was advertised. As the portal opened and the number reached 40,000, it was closed. The best 7,000 will be selected after careful assessment. We will do our best,” he said.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced that it has closed its teacher recruitment application portal just days after it opened on April 10, 2026.

This follows an overwhelming surge in applications, as confirmed above by the minister, prompting authorities to shut down the portal earlier than expected to manage the high volume of submissions.
