'It is a death trap' - Housing Minister orders eviction of Kaiser Flats residents in Tema

The Minister of Works, Housing and Water Resources, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, has directed the management of the Tema Development Corporation (TDC) to issue an eviction notice to residents of the Kaiser Flats in Tema Community 4, citing serious structural and safety risks.

Addressing the media during a tour of the site on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, he emphasised that the government is committed to preventing a recurrence of the recent building collapse at Accra New Town.

According to him, the structures at Kaiser Flats pose an immediate danger, and residents must vacate them without delay to allow for redevelopment works.

“Looking at the structures I have seen here, it is more like a death trap. I ask myself how human beings have decided to live in such structures. I have asked the TDC MD to find out what they are doing about it, because it does not make sense to allow people to live in such conditions.

“The TDC MD mentioned to me that they have engaged the residents and even offered them a place at Kpone for relocation, but they have still insisted on staying. I have therefore directed the MD to put it in writing and give it to the tenants so they can sign to acknowledge that TDC has offered them an alternative place, but they still chose to remain. This is to ensure that if anything happens, they will not turn around and blame the government,” he said.
