Ghana highlights energy sector reforms in talks with World Bank

Ghana’s Finance Minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has held discussions with the World Bank’s Managing Director for Operations, Anna Bjerde, on the country’s economic progress and ongoing policy priorities.

The meeting took place during the ongoing 2026 IMF/World Bank Spring Meetings in Washington, D.C., where both parties reviewed Ghana’s recent economic performance and reform agenda.

Speaking after the engagement, Dr Ato Forson said Ghana has remained resilient despite global economic shocks, attributing the stability to prudent policy decisions, fiscal buffers, and ongoing reforms.

“Despite recent global shocks, Ghana has remained resilient, supported by prudent policy decisions, buffers, and strong reforms,” he said.

He further noted that increased gas production has played a key role in cushioning the impact of rising global energy prices on the domestic economy.

“Increased gas production has also helped cushion the impact of rising energy prices,” he added.

Dr Ato Forson also indicated that government is taking steps to address inefficiencies in the energy distribution sector through private sector participation.

“We are now addressing inefficiencies in the energy distribution sector through private sector participation to improve performance,” he stated.

On her part, Anna Bjerde reaffirmed the World Bank’s continued support for Ghana and emphasised the importance of resolving challenges within the energy sector.

Anna Bjerde also stressed the need for sustained efforts to address structural issues in the energy sector.
