A food vendor has narrated how a young man, believed to be a student at the University of Ghana, allegedly used fake mobile money payment alerts to buy food from her eatery since 2025.

In a video shared on social media on April 15, 2026, the vendor explained that payments are usually made to her personal number.

On days she is not present, her sales girls ask customers to send screenshots of payment before processing orders.

According to her, the suspect repeatedly ordered multiple packs of food along with drinks and arranged for a ride to pick them up, all while sending fake payment screenshots to the vendors.

“I’m the one that accepts payments on my personal number, and when I’m not at the shop, my sales girls would just ask the customer to send them screenshots of payment, and we proceed with your order. So the guy has been taking food like so many times. He doesn’t even take one food; he either takes three, four, and adds drinks,” she shared.

The vendor further recounted that on one occasion, she happened to be at the eatery when the suspect placed another order.

Her sales girls asked her to confirm if she had received GH¢500 from someone identified as Patrick.

She said she had not received any money but, given the pattern of incidents, decided to play along.

According to her, the suspect went ahead to order about four packs of food and sent a rider to pick them up.

She then followed the rider in her car to trace the person behind the order.

The suspect was tracked to a hostel around Okponglo, where it was confirmed that he is a student of the University of Ghana.

Management of the hostel where the student lodged also indicated that he had allegedly used similar fake payment tactics on other vendors he patronised.

She added that the hostel manager suggested she accept GH¢1,000 from the suspect as settlement, but she declined, noting that he had been using the same method on her since 2025.

“The hostel manager was like, ‘This particular guy has been doing it to lots of vendors, so I should sit down. He’s going to bring the guy so that we can negotiate.’ He was like I should let the guy pay us GH¢1,000,” she noted.

The vendor subsequently had the student arrested after he allegedly used fake payment alerts to purchase food from multiple vendors.
