The April edition of the National Sanitation Day will held this Saturday
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced that the April 2026 edition of the National Sanitation Day clean-up exercise will take place on Saturday, April 18, with authorities warning of strict enforcement measures.
According to a statement issued on April 17, 2026, the exercise will begin at 6:00 am and continue “until work is done” in selected parts of the Accra metropolis.
It noted that the exercise forms parts of efforts to improve sanitation in the metropolis.
“The exercise forms part of the Assembly’s continued efforts to improve environmental sanitation, protect public health, and promote collective responsibility for keeping the city clean," it noted.
The AMA outlined key areas for the exercise, including Agbogbloshie, the Central Business District (CBD) and the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange
"The focal areas for the exercise are Agbogbloshie, the Central Business District (CBD), Guggisberg Avenue, Tuesday Market, Chorkor, Kaneshie, Kwame Nkrumah Interchange and their environs," the statement noted.
EXPLAINER: Why government is reintroducing National Sanitation Day
The AMA stressed that enforcement would be a major component of the exercise and urged all residents and stakeholders to participate fully.
“Enforcement will be a key component of the exercise… residents, traders, transport operators, shop owners and all persons within the affected areas must participate fully to avoid sanctions or prosecution for sanitation-related offences,” it warned.
The Assembly further called on the public to support the exercise in large numbers and maintain proper waste disposal practices beyond the clean-up day.
“Sustained environmental cleanliness is critical to preventing disease outbreaks, preserving public spaces and improving the image of the national capital,” the statement added.
