Iran has announced that it is once again closing the Strait of Hormuz, escalating tensions over one of the world’s most critical shipping routes for oil and gas.

According to Al Jazeera, the Iranian military says the waterway will remain shut until the United States lifts its blockade on Iranian ports, according to official statements reported by state-linked sources.

The move marks a sharp reversal from recent developments, after Iran on Friday April 17, 2026, had signalled that the strait was open to commercial shipping following a ceasefire arrangement that briefly eased tensions in the region.

The Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran and Oman, is a vital global energy corridor through which about a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas is transported.

The recent move is now expected to heighten uncertainty in global energy markets, where oil prices have already fluctuated sharply amid shifting signals on maritime access and security conditions in the Gulf.

Maritime tracking data and shipping operators have previously shown reduced vessel movement through the waterway due to security risks, with many companies continuing to exercise caution despite earlier reopening claims.
