The attack on Iran was supposed to only last 4-5 days maximum and result in the complete destruction of the country as a functioning state. Unfortunately, Iran had a huge and very unpleasant surprise for its foes. It’s now over 50 days since Iran was attacked and the bad news for Iran's enemies is that despite having absorbed some devastating blows Iran has been able to deal very heavy blows to its adversaries. It seems Iran's response has both shocked and surprised its foes leaving them scrambling to respond to the unexpected turn of events. If some of the reports are to be believed, more than a dozen American bases have been destroyed or severely damaged in the Gulf region and the Gulf countries hosting American military bases have been hit very hard and, in some cases, repeatedly by Iran causing devastation to vital infrastructure.
For now, military escalation seems a more likely scenario than de-escalation.
Many Persian Gulf countries now feel very vulnerable and very exposed and unable to defend themselves and this will have profound geopolitical consequences for the region. New strategic alliances will emerge with new powerful players taking a pivotal role in the region. Paradoxically despite taking a severe battering Iran's international profile may have been enhanced significantly on multiple fronts because it has been seen to have been able to withstand countless heavy blows by its adversaries to date.
THE BIGGEST THREAT TO THE WORLD STILL REMAINS THE POTENTIAL FOR THIS CONFLICT TO FURTHER EXPAND BY DRAWING IN SOME MILITARY SUPERPOWERS.
Finally, the economic effects of this conflict have been devastating for countries in the Far East but will only start to be felt in countries much further away (Ghana is not immune) in the next 3-5 weeks as they become unable to replenish their energy stocks or struggle to obtain vital fertilisers for their crops or simply face a sharp increase in the price of imported staples. Even if the conflict miraculously stopped immediately the economic ripple effect of this war would continue to be felt for several months globally. Gulf and Middle Eastern Countries directly caught up in this war and who have all suffered significant damage may take several years to recover to their prewar level if at all. Ironically one country that will also be hit hard includes the USA where crop farmers are presently reeling from the soaring price of fertilizers. A significant proportion of the world’s fertilizer supply comes from the Persian Gulf region which is why if this foolish and totally unnecessary war continues it could lead to food shortages and famine on a global scale.
WITH PERSIAN GULF COUNTRIES ENGULFED IN A DESTRUCTIVE WAR THEY NO LONGER LOOK SO APPEALING FROM THE ECONOMIC POINT OF VIEW. WHETHER THIS IS ONLY TEMPORARY OR THE BEGINNING OF A LONG-TERM CHANGE FOR THE WORSE, ONLY TIME WILL TELL.
Before the war trafic flowed freely through the strait of Hormuz but now Iran has a knife to this economic jugular of the world called the Strait of Hormuz and for now it seems like nobody can do much about it without risking even more devastating consequences for the world.
THE ONLY SANE WAY OUT OF THIS MESS IS DE-ESCALATION. Unfortunately many egos and a lot of arrogance and hubris is standing in the way.
