Chief Executive Officer of Engineers and Planners and business mogul Ibrahim Mahama, has expressed appreciation to former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his support in enabling the company’s acquisition of the Damang Mine concession.
Speaking at the official takeover ceremony at on April 18, 2026, the business mogul recounted the lengthy process that led to the transition of the mine from Gold Fields Ghana Limited to Engineers and Planners, saying it followed years of discussions involving multiple stakeholders, including government.
He explained that the process began in 2022 when Gold Fields indicated plans to gradually end its operations, which opened the door for negotiations on how the asset would be handed over in an orderly manner.
According to him, government involvement was instrumental in moving the talks forward, adding that former President Akufo-Addo played a key part in supporting the engagement process.
“I must thank our former President Nana Akufo-Addo. He gave me a document to sit with Gold Fields and negotiate and keep the mine [Damang] going,” he said.

Ibrahim Mahama further indicated that the state helped facilitate discussions that eventually resulted in an agreement to transfer the concession through the necessary regulatory and licensing channels.
He noted that the deal was not simply a business transaction, but also aligned with efforts to build local capacity in large-scale mining operations in Ghana.
“So, I engaged the government and told them that mining is not just buying equipment and working in there. It is the key people that you need to put together,” he stated.
He also disclosed that Engineers and Planners conducted comprehensive technical and financial evaluations before securing the concession, including a bankable feasibility study and securing funding commitments from both international and local financial institutions.
“We did a bankable study. We looked at it and noticed that we could do it. We approached a few of the banks in here. One has given us 650 million, another 600 million,” he noted.
