1978 AFCON winner Mohammed Polo
Legendary Ghanaian footballer Mohammed Polo has criticised the Ghana Football Association (GFA) over its decision to appoint Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz to lead the Black Stars to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
He argued that there are capable local managers, such as Karim Zito and Kassim Mingle, who are performing well and should have been considered for the role.
The 1978 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winner contended that bringing in a foreign coach discourages local managers, who deserve motivation rather than neglect during crucial moments.
“We have coaches in the system who are working and trying to develop the local context. Why do you go and take somebody from Belgium and bring him here? And we don’t encourage what we have here?” he questioned while speaking on Channel One TV.
He further pointed to the achievements of emerging local coaches, insisting they should be given opportunities at the highest level.
“These younger ones who have got the chance now, like Zito, who at one point was working and we could see what he was trying to do, he achieved something. And then there’s Kassim Mingle. To me, these are up-and-coming coaches who should be given the chance,” he said.
Polo questioned the rationale behind appointing a foreign coach instead of promoting local talent, arguing that such decisions undermine the development of Ghanaian coaches.

At this point, there’s nothing anyone can do. The GFA rushed the appointment of Carlos Queiroz,” —Mohammed Polo.#CitiSports #WorldCup pic.twitter.com/SAHY2i0csH
