Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa is Ghana's Minister of Foreign Affairs
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has confirmed that he has held urgent discussions with his South African counterpart, Ronald Lamola, over the safety of Ghanaians in his country.
“I called him on the trending videos about Ghanaians coming under extremely disturbing xenophobic attacks in South Africa,” he said.
According to Ablakwa, the response from Pretoria has been reassuring, with authorities pledging to investigate the incidents and engage diplomatic missions.
“The South African Foreign Minister has expressed his empathy with the victims and promised full-scale investigations into the depressing incidents,” he added.
Meanwhile, Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Benjamin Quarshie, has been working closely with officials in Accra to locate affected individuals and provide support.
“I can confirm that I have been in constant contact with our High Commissioner, coordinating our response,” the minister noted.
He disclosed that one of the individuals seen in the viral footage has already been located and is receiving consular assistance.
“I am glad that our diplomatic mission has found the main victim in the video and is offering support. He is doing very well,” he said.
While the videos have sparked concern, the minister reassured the public that no Ghanaian fatalities have been recorded. “No Ghanaian life has been lost. We urge calm and confidence in our collective capacity to protect Ghanaians,” he stated.
Ablakwa further emphasised that the government under John Dramani Mahama remains committed to safeguarding the welfare of citizens both at home and abroad.
Amid rising tensions, he also called for unity across the continent, cautioning against allowing isolated incidents to undermine African solidarity.
“The overwhelming majority of Africans are united and share an unbreakable bond; we shall not be divided by the hatred of a few fringe elements,” he said.
