The Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, gifted newly appointed Black Stars coach, Carlos Queiroz a traditional smock, locally known as fugu, during his presentation on April 23, 2026.

During the presentation, the minister welcomed the Portuguese coach to his new role and wished him the best of luck ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

He raised the issue of how the smock gained attention on social media following President John Dramani Mahama’s recent visit to Zambia, which led to the declaration of National Fugu Day.

In light of that, Kofi Adams indicated that the ministry has taken it upon itself to promote the traditional outfit and therefore wanted Queiroz to wear it as a symbolic gesture to officially usher him into his new role.

“Recently, our president went to Zambia and wore one of our traditional dresses that we call fugu or smock, and it generated a certain drive. Out of that drive, Wednesday was declared National Fugu Day."
