Newly appointed Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has outlined a strict, merit-based approach to player selection, insisting that no footballer is guaranteed a place in the national team regardless of reputation or status.
Speaking shortly after his official unveiling on Thursday, April 23, 2026, Queiroz stressed that every call-up must be earned through performance and commitment.
“Nobody owns the national team shirt. It is my job to give a fair opportunity. It is my job to ensure that those who wear the jersey truly deserve it,” he said, setting the tone for what he described as a new competitive culture within the Black Stars setup.
His comments come amid long-standing debates over consistency and selection policies in the national team. The Portuguese tactician, who has previously managed clubs and national teams including Real Madrid and Portugal, appears determined to reset expectations ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
