A mining accident at Assin Dansame in the Assin North District has claimed two lives, with one other person injured, following the collapse of an illegal mining (galamsey) pit.

The incident, reported in a post shared by @THESTATENEWSS on April 24, 2026, has left the local community in shock and mourning.

A video accompanying the post showed grieving residents gathered at the scene of the accident, wailing over the tragic loss.

According to details provided in the post, the deceased have been identified as 22-year-old Osei Serwaa and a 22-year-old man known as Oduro.

An 18-year-old boy who was also trapped in the pit survived but sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment at a hospital, it added.

A resident of the community, speaking in the video, expressed frustration over the persistent practice, despite repeated warnings.

“We have been warning them against the practice of galamsey, but we realised they had sneaked an excavator to the site to mine.

“I am calling on National Security to intervene to curb the practice in this town,” the resident said.

In total, three individuals were rescued from the collapsed pit, with one requiring medical attention.
