I told you that those tribes that were last to migrate to present day Ghana cause the most tribalism trouble. The Ga-Adangbe came soon after the arrival of the colonists from Nigeria. The Ayi and the Gbi came much later, from the same place. Why would they, with a combined exaggerated total of 22% share of Ghana’s population, expect to make rules for the bigger groups all the time? Going by the same arithmetic, the Twi Speakers make up 50%, more than double the number of the Ayigbe, Ga, Ada and Krobo put together and much bigger than the Mole-Dagbani at 17%. The rest combined, including Guans, stand at 11%. I feel sorry for the Ga and their backward thinking Opinion Leaders concerning this issue. Do they know that Chinese (Mandarin) has 900 million native speakers? Worldwide, English has less than half. But the world speaks English for some reasons any non-Ga Thinker can work out. How does English become a global language with 1.4 billion speakers over Chinese? Lawrence Tetteh and Dzifa Gomashie don’t have the brains to think through that. Nobody in India (1.4 billion population, 600 million Hindi Speakers) is complaining about who speaks French or Ga. Civilised people understand the dynamics. One would expect that such intelligent people like Ghanaians with their constant rant over colonialism and imperialism could rally around one of their own dialects. Obviously, the most widely spoken makes it easier. But no, the black man with black sense hates his own. When others are coming together to make it stronger and better, self hate keeps pulling us down.

It equally happens outside Ghana. I live in Manchester,UK and frequent a Ghanaian owned shop in Moss Side,Manchester. It is exactly the same.They start talking to you in Twi and when you tell them you do not speak Twi,they shut up but look at you as if to say , are you really a Ghanaian?
It instantly kills the conversation. I am not the least surprised that,people live in Accra for most of their lives without learning Ga.Most of the Twi speaking people cannot interact with the indigenous white folks outside of Ghana.

That is one way of looking at this grave issue but certainly not the best. I think a practical way of curing this will be through a local governance act where licensed private stations are mandated to broadcast in the indigenous language during a day's transmission. The parameters can be worked out but this will do a few things : 1. Not stem private investment in the sector. 2. Help preserve the local languages. 3. Promote diversity.
The Ga culture and it's language (this may also apply to other parts of the country) is certainly under serious threat of being lost. Anyone who dismisses this is being disingenuous. The way forward is not to fight one another but recognise this, embrace some changes, and actively mitigate against this powerfully negative consequence of local migration and gentrification.
The incident is unfortunate but the journalist could be open to learning a few Ga phrases and showcasing his skills at every opportunity. I take pride in exhibiting my halting Twi when I meet with Akan friends or interact with other Akans. I learn from those interactions and even enjoy them. Most of my Akan friends also speak Ga without hesitation. It is such a beautiful world when we support and love one another.

The change from the 7 years O & A Levels to 3yrs SSS is part of the reason why Ga is no more popular.Some of us who went to Secondary schools in the 80s effortlessly started speaking the Ga language after our 7yrs boarding housing education at Accra Aca. It was the same in many Secondary schools located in Greater Accra. Akans ,Hausas ,Ewes & Frafras students easily picked the language. We were even lucky to add Hausa language bcoz some of us had the opportunity to live among Hausas in Madina & Mamobi. Learning other languages help a lot, it improves your security, allows you to easily move around and can create opportunities for you.

This fake Man of God doesn't know that majority of the inhabitants of Accra has always been Akans namely, Kwahus, Ashantis, Brongs and the Akyems. You should be ashamed of yourself when you look at where your Gas predominantly live since time immemorial.
