The incident occurred at a critical facility within the country’s power generation
Spokesperson for the Ministry of Energy, Richmond Rockson, has stated that the widespread power interruptions experienced across Ghana in the last 24 hours were caused by a fire explosion at the Akosombo Substation.
According to him, the incident occurred at a critical facility within the country’s power generation and transmission network, leading to a complete halt in electricity generation from the Akosombo Dam.
He explained that the shutdown has resulted in the loss of approximately 1,000 megawatts of power to the national grid, placing significant strain on the electricity system and causing outages in many parts of the country.
“In the last 24 hours, we have experienced widespread power interruptions beyond the isolated pockets of outages. This has been triggered by a fire explosion at the Akosombo substation, a critical facility within our power generation and transmission network.
Akosombo Dam Outage: Full power restoration could take five days after fire
“As we speak, no power is being generated from Akosombo, resulting in a loss of approximately 1,000 megawatts to the national grid. This sudden shortfall has placed significant strain on the system and is the main cause of the broader interruptions currently being experienced, “he said in a social media post on April 25, 2026.
Rockson noted that the current disruptions extend beyond the usual isolated pockets of outages, with several areas experiencing broader supply interruptions.
“Our engineers and technical teams are on site and working around the clock to restore generation as quickly and safely as possible.
“We therefore appeal to the public to bear with us during this period. Government remains committed to restoring full power generation,” he added.
