Deputy Chief Executive Officer for the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), Dr Michael Ayamga-Adongo, says the loss at the Bank of Ghana is nothing different.

According to him, central banks can incur losses to ensure economic and price stability rather than maximize profit.

He says, unlike 2023 and 2024, when the impact of the losses was not seen directly, Ghanaians are seeing the direct impact of the losses made.

“A central bank can incur losses primarily because its mandate is to ensure economic and price stability rather than to maximise profit. Unlike in 2023 and 2024, we are seeing direct impacts from the losses (cost of stabilization),” he said in a post shared via social media.

The Bank of Ghana recorded a much larger loss in 2025, according to its annual report and Financial Statements released on May 1, 2026.

BoG gold purchase initiative records GH¢9.1 billion net cost

The Bank posted a loss of GH¢15.63 billion for the year ended December 31, 2025. This represents a 65% increase from the GH¢9.49 billion loss recorded in 2024.

At the Group level, which includes its subsidiaries, losses also rose to GH¢15.29 billion, up from GH¢9.41 billion the previous year.

This indicates that financial pressure affected both the Bank and its related entities.
