The Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi has criticised the government’s handling of the economy, insisting that headline economic stability does not reflect the daily struggles of ordinary Ghanaians.

Speaking at a press briefing on May 3, 2026, the MP argued that while official figures may suggest improvement, citizens' lived experiences tell a different story, marked by high living costs and limited economic opportunities.

Introducing his concerns, he pointed to the persistent gap between wages and the cost of living, as well as ongoing challenges faced by cocoa farmers and small businesses.

“So, stability of numbers, respectfully, is not the same as stability of livelihoods,” he said, stressing that a stable economy without a thriving private sector is incomplete stability. It is the lived experiences of the people that matter the most.

He further warned that youth unemployment has worsened, rising from 30% to 34%, and stressed that many young people remain unable to secure jobs despite government assurances.

Oppong Nkrumah highlighted difficulties within the public sector, noting that some workers, particularly teachers and nurses, are going months without pay, while teacher trainees no longer receive three square meals a day.

He added that businesses continue to struggle with access to affordable credit, which limits expansion and job creation, and called for targeted interventions to support enterprises and improve livelihoods beyond macroeconomic indicators.
