Have the religious groups and traditionalists who conduct prayers for the dead ever presented any evidence that their prayers have in any way benefited the dead? Humans all over the world have engaged in practices like praying for the souls of the dead to receive forgiveness from God and to be allowed entry into God's kingdom. Unfortunately, such practice continues today even though many religious teachings have it that once a person dies, the soul immediately either descends into heaven or hell. So why then the prayers? It's so because humans are for the most part followers, often following without stopping to either ask questions for fear of being ostracized by their peers or merely following because they've been indoctrinated. If prayers can change the fortunes of the dead, then murderers, rapists and other hardened criminals would never have to worry about their evil actions since prayers will help their souls to sail into the God's kingdom. No human knows exactly what happens to upon one's death, regardless of the various forms of prayers held for the dead across the globe. I don't know what P. Djamgbe's view is on the issue you raised, but felt it necessary to share mine. The world is a mystery that can't be unraveled, and so too is the aftermath of death.
