Where is the Korle-Bu Hospital Administration? This is not a matter for the Ministry of Health to intervene. Medical doctors should focus on their core duties and leave laboratory tests to the persons qualified to do so, unless the doctors want to add laboratory work to their core duties. Or maybe there is some underpinnings that the public is not being made aware of. This is not a reason to lay down tools. Any small matter in Ghana leads to industrial action.

The claim that, medical doctors are trained to diagnose and treat patients only, is borne out of ignorance, with all due respect to the General Secretary of the laboratory scientists. Some the greatest breakthrough in medical research was made by medical practitioners. Indeed, just as recently as 2023, the nobel prize for Medicine was co-won by Drew Weissman MD, PHD, whose pioneering in mRNA vaccine technology, saved us from the covid pandemic. Mention can also be made of Harvey J. Altar, Nobel laureate in 2020 a physician and a virologist whose work led to the discovery of Hepatitis C to mention just a few. They might have a genuine grievance in their desire for adminitrative progression in the hospital leadership, but this should not result in sweeping ignorant claims.

Your comment/analysis is factual to a great extent. Medical discoveries come out of the Laboratory but those labs are purposely designed for medical research and not to interfere with hospital operations. No one is against research work but the doctors cannot co-opt the laboratories as part of their domain. Standalone research facilities can be established if the doctors want more exposure. What this article implied (if I got it right) is for doctors to have the last word before laboratory results are released. In my opinion, the doctors would be crossing the line by demanding such.

Laboratory physicians are well rounded with pathological, biochemical basis of diseases and they are well equiped with knowledge to supervise lab operations than leaving the labs for the lab scientists or the lab technologies . Not very safe for the lab scientists to be autonomous on their own since their knowledge is not clinically rounded like a medical doctor or lab physician.

Laboratory technicians, technologists and scientists work under the supervision of laboratory physicians and pathologists, in all clinical settings. These laboratory workers should know their operational limits and behave accordingly. This power stuggle must stop immediately

Simply put the korlebu administration should come out clearly with the SOPs (standard Operation procedures) for laboratory practice at the labs so that things dont escalate at the expense of innocent patients.
