The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has introduced "free NHIS registration and renewal", along with "immediate access to healthcare" for all Ghanaians.
This initiative, known as the "STORM Initiative", marks a significant milestone in the country’s health history.
NHIA CEO Dr Victor Asare Bampoe unveiled the initiative during a press conference held on May 4, 2026, emphasising the Authority's core mandate: “making quality healthcare accessible to every Ghanaian and every legal resident of this country.”
He highlighted that all efforts made by the NHIA are geared towards achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC), defined by the World Health Organisation as ensuring that all individuals have access to the necessary health services without facing financial hardship.
“In simpler terms, no Ghanaian should ever have to choose between their health and their finances,” Dr Bampoe stated.
UHC is built on three fundamental pillars: Quality of Care, Equitable Access, and Financial Protection.
“The NHIS is Ghana's primary vehicle for achieving UHC. It is the engine that finances healthcare for our people, bridging the gap between those in need and the care they deserve. Every policy, campaign, and partnership we undertake serves the purpose of advancing UHC,” he added.
Dr Bampoe officially announced the launch of the STORM Initiative, a nationwide, high-impact program aimed at bringing free NHIS registration and renewal directly to communities across Ghana.
STORM represents the Authority’s strategy to mobilise NHIA staff at all levels, particularly at the district level, to engage with communities whether in markets, churches, mosques, lorry stations or workplaces creating mass awareness and assisting every Ghanaian in seizing this opportunity.
“For the avoidance of doubt, this is a landmark moment in Ghana’s health history,” Dr Bampoe asserted.
Historically, the NHIA had waived the one-month waiting period for new and returning members during certain campaigns, but this new initiative goes much further.
"For the FIRST TIME in the history of Ghana’s National Health Insurance Scheme, we are simultaneously waiving both registration and renewal fees AND the one-month waiting period," he explained.
Previously, individuals would pay a processing fee or premium when joining or renewing their NHIS membership, and then they would have to wait one month before accessing care.
“That wait is gone. The fees are gone. This has never happened before,” he proclaimed.
The STORM initiative became operational from April 15 and is expected to run till May 31, 2026.
In practical terms, this means FREE first-time registration, no fees or premiums for renewals (including lapsed and long-expired memberships), and IMMEDIATE access to NHIS services with no waiting period.
To conclude, the NHIA aims to enhance access to healthcare for all Ghanaians, ensuring that health is a right for everyone, irrespective of their economic status, through this initiative.
