The Ghana Armed Forces have initiated work on the Accra–Kumasi Expressway project, clearing 17.75 kilometres of thick vegetation just weeks after deployment.
The Minister for Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, shared the update on X on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, commending the military for the rapid progress on the flagship infrastructure initiative.
Four military work groups are currently operating from Asuboa, near Akim Oda, pushing through challenging weather conditions to meet a tight 20-week timeline for the initial clearing phase.
The 198.7-kilometre, six-lane expressway is a major priority of the administration of President John Dramani Mahama.
Once completed, the project is expected to reduce travel time between Accra and Kumasi from the current six hours to approximately two hours.
In November 2025, Dr Forson reaffirmed the government’s commitment to delivering the entire project within three years.
Senior military officers, including the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Lieutenant General William Agyapong, have visited the site to inspect progress and commended the troops for their pace and dedication.
Addressing the soldiers, Lieutenant General Agyapong urged caution and respect for property rights.
“So make sure that in your dealings, especially when we come across some farms and properties, let’s be sure that they have been assessed by the valuers already and we’ve been given the go-ahead before we go ahead to destroy them,” he said.
“But once again, thank you for your hard work. Let’s see how we push this through. When there are issues, within the shortest possible time, let us know and be assured that everything you require to get this job done will be made available.”
Parliament has already approved the concession agreement for the project, with the Ministry of Roads and Highways as the contracting authority and Accra–Kumasi Expressway Limited as the concessionaire.
