Ex-MP alleges BECE students charged GH¢2,500 to feed invigilators, pay supervisors

Former Member of Parliament for Agona West in the Central Region, Cynthia Morrison, has called for investigations into the ongoing Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

According to Morrison, who also served as Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, some schools are allegedly demanding GH¢2,500 from students to cook for invigilators and allocate part of the money to external supervisors.

She claimed to have personally followed up on the issue, making calls to confirm that schools around Spintex in Greater Accra are demanding such amounts.

She further alleged that other schools are charging GH¢1,500 and GH¢2,000 for similar practices.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM on May 5, 2026, Morrison stated that such practices corrupt students.

“Yesterday I received several reports from the Greater Accra Region concerning the ongoing BECE. Some schools in Spintex are charging GH¢2,500, Mamprobi students GH¢1,500 and Abeka GH¢2,000.

“A friend at Abeka explained that the money is used to buy food, clean the school and give some to external invigilators.

“But how do you charge a student who is writing exams GH¢2,500? For what purpose?” she fumed.

She also recounted an incident where an external invigilator was locked outside and could not find the key to enter the exam hall. By the time he gained access, activities inside had already been manipulated.

Morrison condemned the practice, stressing, “So what at all are we teaching our children with these practices?”
