The problem with most churches that preach tithing, is that, they instruct us to pay tithes the way Abraham paid a tithe to Melchizedek and not the tithe under the law of Moses. What they never mention is that....
1. Abraham paid a tithe only once in the Bible, and it was by his own free will, not by a commandment like circumcision. There is no mention of any other time he tithed.
2. There is no mention that he taught Isaac to tithe. There is no account that Isaac ever tithed.
3. Jacob's promise to pay tithe in future, when he was on his way to Laban his uncle, shows that he had never tithed before that, hence had not been brought up tithing by his father.
4. Many pastors say we are to pay tithes like Abraham, who was not under the law, but then, quote the curses under the mosaic law from Malachai (the devourer), to manipulate and intimidate their congregations into paying tithes. However, when it is not about tithing, then they quote Gal 3:16 that Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law.

In a nutshell, there is no commandment in the new testament to pay or not pay a tithe to your church, but any giving should only be by your own free will and not by compulsion or out of fear. Proportionate giving is what the new testament instructs us to do, and the tithe is in the old testament as a record, for us to be able to freely decide under grace, what an acceptable proportion of our income we should give to God. So if you want to tithe, fine, but it should not be by force, out of fear or compulsion.

We are not saved by works, pastor. It is good to give but never by compulsion. Read 2 Corinthians 9:7. I don't know if these tithes dependent pastors read a different Bible. Blind men leading the blind. What a shame!!!! Rev Benny Hinn, Pastor Enoch Adeboye and Bishop T. D. Jakes have all turned around and proclaimed that tithing never leads to salvation. They used to preach that view. The younger pastors must be very careful.

The famous John 3:16&17 says, For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

This is a false doctrine and should not be practiced. If someone is dying and you use your tithe to save that dying person, what is wrong with that?

During a teaching service in church years ago, we were asked a rhetorical question that, if you came across a hit and run victim while on your way to church and you took the victim to hospital and they need a deposit to save his life, would you use your tithe to take care of the deposit?

After all the contributions, the group leader said it wasn't right to give up your tithe. I was in my early twenties then and I knew there was something very wrong with that bible study group leader.

Over thirty years later, I still think there was something very wrong with that leader.

People don't understand what it means to be a Christian. They think it's strictly following old testament laws.

If you are in doubt, ask yourself, what would Jesus do in this situation. I doubt if Jesus would hold on to his tithe if someone needed it to stay alive.
