Former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has called on persons he describes as “good men” in the country to rise and protect the integrity of Ghana’s law enforcement system.

This follows his accusation against some state officials of abusing prosecutorial powers and violating the rights of accused persons.

Speaking on the handling of some criminal prosecutions on JoyNews on May 6, 2026, Dame said some public officials destroy the reputation of individuals even before their cases are properly tested in court.

He argued that some prosecutions are withdrawn after accused persons have already suffered public humiliation and reputational damage.

“After bastardizing them in the eyes of the public, holding them to ransom, destroying, tearing their reputation to shreds, and saying that they have committed stealing and all that; finding out that indeed there is no evidence at all to support the charges and thus the prosecution would not be as smooth as he wanted, he decided to withdraw and then resort to extrajudicial harassment,” he said.

Dame further stated that law enforcement processes in the country would improve if people with integrity were in charge of enforcing the law.

“It cannot be possible. Why? I mean, I think that some time ago when I made a comment on your station that there has to be... I think good men in the country will have to wake up; I was met with a lot of serious backlash.

“‘I'm talking about good men and that kind of thing’, but that's what we're witnessing. If indeed we have good men who are actually in charge of the process of law enforcement, we'll not be doing that,” he stated.

Dame also accused the Attorney General and Deputy Attorney General of violating the rights of accused persons before formal charges are filed.

He said some public comments made by prosecutors suggest accused persons are guilty even before court proceedings begin.

“In this case, you find the Attorney General himself, the Deputy Attorney General himself violating people's rights before they file your charges. I have a draft charge in my hand and then you say you're pronouncing people guilty,” he added.

Dame's comments comes on the back of the prosecution of several former government officials under the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) initiative.
