Renowned Ghanaian actor and producer Oscar Provencal has spoken out following the tragic incident in which a chief accidentally shot himself during a public durbar.

Nana Kwabena Okyere, the Mmratehene of Ayanfuri, a mining town in the Central Region, reportedly lost his life after a shooting incident on May 9, 2026.

The traditional ruler lost his life after succumbing to injuries he sustained when he accidentally shot himself while performing at a funeral ceremony.

Reacting to this on the GTV Breakfast show and monitored by GhanaWeb on Monday, May 11, 2026, Oscar Provencal questioned the use of live ammunition at such gatherings and called for greater responsibility from traditional leaders in public spaces.

“I’m being very respectful here because, you know, you don’t take an action shotgun. It’s not even a gunpowder-loaded gun,” he noted, appearing to question whether the weapon involved live ammunition or blanks.

The actor said it is hard for him to sympathise with people who often attend durbars while carrying gunpowder weapons and wondered whether drugs may have played a role in the incident.

He stressed that even traditional guns can be dangerous if not handled properly.

“I don’t have any sympathy for anybody who goes with light bullets into a crowd. Be you, chief or be whoever you are.

“It’s good to portray our culture. But one life. One life. The loss of one life through our culture, I don’t think our culture is more important than the loss of life,” he said in the interview.

Oscar Provencal also called for education through the Traditional Council and the government.
