Fierce rainstorms are reported to have caused severe damage to the floodlights at the Accra Sports Stadium, creating a burden for authorities.

Reports indicate that storms swept across the stadium’s vicinity in late April, specifically on April 29, 2026, resulting in the damage.

It was noted that the rainstorm was accompanied by torrential rainfall and intense winds, which the floodlight system could not withstand. One of the towers is said to have sustained serious structural damage.

Two other towers were less compromised but still affected, leaving them unable to function properly, which could disrupt activities at the stadium.

This has raised concerns about the quality and resilience of stadium infrastructure, which requires serious attention to prevent similar issues in the future.

Meanwhile, the National Sports Authority (NSA) has assured that it will continue to “conduct inspections to determine the extent of the damage and the extent of structural integrity compromise. Their findings will determine the potential impact on upcoming events at the facility.”

Renovation of sporting infrastructure across the country remains a major challenge, as Ghana seeks to meet modern standards while positioning itself to host major international competitions.
