Joseph Paul Amoah says he is proud of the fight shown by Team Ghana despite narrowly missing out on a podium finish in the men’s 100m final at the African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra.
The Ghanaian sprinter spoke after finishing fourth in a fiercely contested final at the University of Ghana Stadium on Wednesday night, May 13, 2026.
Fellow Ghanaian Abdul-Rasheed Saminu also missed out on the medals after placing sixth.
Coming into the race, Amoah had openly declared his ambition to finish on the podium in front of the home crowd, but the competition proved extremely intense against some of Africa’s fastest sprinters.
“The goal was to make the podium. I wanted to go round by round and then, when you get to the final, it’s about who wants it most,” Amoah admitted after the race.
Despite the disappointment of finishing outside the medal positions, the experienced sprinter praised the quality of competition and insisted difficult contests help athletes improve.
“It was a very tight race, a very competitive one and we like it when our competitors are tough. It brings out the best in us,” he said.
Amoah, however, maintained a positive outlook following the final, expressing satisfaction with the overall performance despite not achieving the desired podium finish.
“We are very happy about what happened,” he added.
The men’s 100m final was one of the standout events on day two of the championships, with Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme eventually storming to gold in Accra.
