Ghana is a one unitary state and must promote a strong central government and minimised decentralization. All ethnic caucuses in both major parties must be abolished. The word 'tribe' which is a Eurocentric pejorative to divide us must be abolished and replaced with the word 'society'. Filling of forms for national purposes must avoid the parts which enjoins you to state your ethnic background. That's one of the ways to avoid national fragmentation and disintegration.

And the irony is sharp. Let’s take a clear-eyed look at history. Asante’s imperial project was, at its core, a state-building enterprise. The great Asante expansion was aimed at consolidating peoples, territories, and trade under one flag and one integrated authority. That objective—creating a cohesive geopolitical entity—was not far removed from what the British colonial project ultimately accomplished. Yes, the structures would have been different: the capital would likely be Kumasi, not Accra, and allegiance would be sworn to the Golden Stool. But those are details of architecture, not destination. The fundamental drive was toward the same unified nation state we call Ghana today. So why, then, would Asante now wish to break away from a country that essentially fulfilled—hurried along by colonial history—the very dream their forebears pursued?

Kwamena Ahwoi and those who share his playbook have benefited handsomely from the talent, resources, and resilience of Asante. Yet behind closed doors, the disparaging whispers continue. This is not just ingratitude; it is a political strategy that has come at a steep cost to Ghana’s development. The obsession with “checkmating” Ashanti—curbing its growth, diluting its voice—has given us a suffocating centralization. It is a major reason we still do not elect our own District Assembly members, chief executives, and mayors on a party ticket. Instead, we have MMDCEs whose primary loyalty tilts upward to the appointing authority, not downward to the communities they serve. Much of the stagnation and disjointed progress at the local level can be traced right back to this mindset—a mindset embodied and defended for decades by Kwamena Ahwoi.

Fear-driven politics may win short-term battles, but it cannot bend the arc of history. The Asante spirit remains unshakable, and Ghana’s full potential will only be unlocked when we retire the old, tired game of division for good.

The Ashanti Kingdom was powerful historically, yes. But this is 2026, not 1826. Modern states don’t run on “my ancestors were warriors” energy.
Ashantis are influential, no doubt. But influence is not ownership. Ghana belongs to Akans, Ewes, Gas, Dagombas, Northerners — everybody. Nobody has the receipt.
Even many Ashantis themselves are proudly Ghanaian. So who exactly is starting this “new country”? Twitter spaces activists?
Secession is not football transfer season. You don’t just wake up and say: “We’re leaving with Kumasi and two goats.”
ECOWAS and the African Union would shut that movie down fast. Africa already learned the hard way that ethnic breakup talk can turn countries into chaos.
And honestly, if every ethnic group in Africa decided to create its own country, we’d have 3,000 nations and border posts every 10 minutes.
Most importantly:

The Northern Irish, Scottish, and Welsh, didn't become part of Britain by popular acclamation, and remain part of it, more by reason of a shared common interest and destiny. Ethiopia however, which the learned Prof cited as not been colonised, and by inference, not socially constructed has some of the most restive, seccessionist, movements in Africa. Eritrea broke away in 1990, Tigray another region, is fighting a war of Independence. Even Omhoria, where the current president comes from, has a rebel army. Ashanti's are some of the most friendly and tolerant people you can find in Ghana, and it is no co-incidence,that Kumasi is one of the most, if not the most cospolitan city in Ghana.Ashanti has given a lot to Ghana, and has received a lot from it. The world is now massively interconnected as never before in its history. You only have to look at the huge mess unfolding in the Gulf region to see this reality in action. Iran’s attackers are now experiencing a very severe and painful blowback for this very same reason. The damage to Iran has been massive but so has been the gigantic boomerang effect or blowback on Iran’s foes and the rest of the global economy. THIS IS GLOBAL INTERDEPENCE PLAYING OUT IN REAL TIME.
Talk of secession would be very much welcomed by some external powers who would love to once again dismember and divide Africa including Ghana. Some declining ex-colonial powers are increasingly entertaining dreams and visions of taking back their ex-colonies one way of the other to reverse their rapidly declining fortunes. That war almost disintegrated the Ashanti Empire as its soldiers who lost the war were warned that if they return home they will be beheaded. So they decided to stay with Ewhes in the Volta Region.

So, from that, federation can lead to the disintegration of Ashanti itself if not handled well.

The stage for what Prof speaks about has been set by Akufo Addo with the creation of tribal regions up north. Prof was clear that the only reason the Ashantis have not cesseded is because they have had wise leadership. I agree with him. Akufo Addo knew we have never had wise leaders up north, only tribal bigots and war mongers, yet created purely tribal regions for ye very people creating trouble in the northern part of Ghana: Mamprusis, Dagombas and Gonjas. When the regions were together, appointments were very often managed to get a balance to avoid a situation where one of these tribes held all the security controlled positions like regional minister, dce, regional and district security coordinators. Now, you have regions like Savannah and North East having just one dominant tribe and their coconspirators holding all these positions. These regions also are the ones insisting on having every public servant being their own. So they can sit at the regional coordinating council and district level and plan war and how to deal with minority tribes and execute without check.

A recent example is what happened in the savannah region when the conflict erupted in the Sawla-Tuna and bole districts. They deployed soldiers to sawla and stationed them there while the hoodlums calling themselves warriors were killing people in the villages. When the soldiers were asked why they were not intervening, they said they were waiting for instructions from above in the region, which is the regional minister. For three days, the soldiers were stationed in sawla whilst people were massacred in the villages. A similar thing is happening in the north east region where tribal hoodlums are ambushing cars coming from the upper east region with kussasi passengers and the regional minister cares less.

The creation of these tribal regions has set the northern part of Ghana on a perpetual path of conflicts.

What was the national security breath that informed the creation of those regions? Was the government not told there were simmering feudal tendencies that were only suppressed by the combined regions and that any separation along tribal lines will create this problem? Or the agenda was to create them and let them eventually say they want to break away?

Is this not part of the agenda of the UP party that opposed the inclusion of northern Ghana in the days of Nkrumah? Some of us campaigned vigorously against the creation of these regions but the tribalists succeeded, and here we are. Pitiful country full of evil and diabolic minds.

Kwamena is wrong about Ghana disintegrating. The countries he cited did not (join up to form one country or) break-up because of decentralization. It was ideology - Communism (in the case of Soviet Union and Yugoslavia) and religion and ethnicity (in the case of Nigeria), NOT decentralization. Come again, Kwamena Ahwoi.
